Fire Prevention Coordinator

This past week I was offered the opportunity to be Eden Prairie’s Fire Prevention Coordinator (another step toward my goal of world domination). Actually, a great opportunity to continue my learning and involvement with the EPFD and Eden Prairie Community. Not sure of the specific responsibilities but for now I am responsible for coordinating and managing the resources for up October 10 Open House. Once that is over I will focus on the big picture of how to maximize the relationship between the EFPD and the schools, residents and business.

I am looking forward to apply my business acumen and this newly discovered passion for the EPFD>

Code 3

Just completed the final step towards the required training for EPFD small vehicle code three. "Responding to/from" fire scene's is usually one of the leading cause of Fire Fighter deaths (39% in 2008).

First Year FF (completed FF1 & FF2) are required to attend a defensive driving class. Second, FF are required to spend a few hours driving and operating each of the small vehicle types in our fleet including:
R41-suburban used primarily for medical rescue calls
U41-Utility a 4x4 pickup truck used to transport gear and equipment
B41-Brush Truck which is U41 plus a towable 6 wheeled gaiter used a to reach difficult ‘off-road’ & trail brush fires.
B11-Brush Truck a 4X4 pickup truck with pump and built in water tank in the bed.

Next we spend some time learning the city’s streets, mapping and unique route/situations.

The final step is to respond (drive code 3) with an officer in a supervised roll. Today we had a vehicle roll-over that required a code 3 response. I can say it is different experience being in control of the vehicle, lights & siren blaring, knowing that you are responsible for your vehicle and all those around you. We safely arrived on scene. Looking forward to more training.
